Import guide

The car is only legal when your local system says it is.

Import rules are not universal. A car that is simple for one buyer can be complex for another because of state, province, emissions, inspection, insurance, or engineering requirements. Use this guide as a planning framework, not legal advice.

Confirm eligibility before bidding

Before you bid or pay a deposit, confirm whether that exact chassis can legally enter and register in your location. Age-based rules may help in some countries, but they do not automatically solve emissions, title, inspection, insurance, or state-level rules.

Ask your importer for the required documents, expected timeline, and what happens if the car arrives with missing paperwork or mismatched details.

Shipping and transport questions

Shipping cost is only one line item. Ask about inland transport in Japan, port fees, shipping method, marine insurance, customs broker fees, storage fees, cleaning, and final transport from the port to your home or workshop.

  • Confirm what is insured and when coverage begins and ends.
  • Ask who photographs the car before loading and after arrival.
  • Budget for delays and storage if paperwork is not ready.
  • Keep copies of every invoice and shipping document.

Landing cost is the real purchase price

The real number includes purchase price, broker fee, inland transport, export fee, shipping, insurance, import duty, tax, port handling, compliance work, inspection, registration, tires, fluids, battery, and first-service parts.

Build a spreadsheet before you shop seriously. If a car only makes sense when every cost estimate is optimistic, it probably does not make sense.

Local compliance and inspection

Once the car arrives, your local rules matter more than online opinions. Check lighting, tires, glass, emissions, noise, seatbelts, safety inspection, engineering approval, insurance valuation, and registration category.

The best import plan includes a local workshop or inspector before the car lands. The worst plan is assuming you can solve everything after the container opens.
